Morning in Old Nice, when the city is at its most alive. Your private guide leads you through the flower and produce stalls of the Cours Saleya, into baroque chapels hidden behind ochre facades, and along lanes where laundry still hangs between the windows.

Then the city falls away behind you. Your driver climbs into the hills of Bellet, a tiny wine appellation that sits inside the city limits, to the red-walled Château de Crémat. Among its vines, you taste three of its wines with a view that reaches down to the sea.

Small group, full day (8 hours)Èze, Monaco and Monte-Carlo

The coast road east of Nice is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and this day follows it to its highlights. First Èze, a medieval village perched on a rock high above the sea, its lanes climbing to a view that takes in the whole Riviera. At its foot, a guided visit of the Fragonard perfume factory reveals how the scents of Provence are made.

Then Monaco: the old town on its Rock, the Prince's Palace, the narrow streets above the harbour full of yachts. The day ends in Monte-Carlo, on the square of its famous casino, where the Grand Prix cars race past every spring.

A day inland, into the Provence that inspired painters and perfumers. After the palm trees of the Croisette in Cannes, the road rises to Grasse, the world capital of perfume, whose know-how is recognised by UNESCO. In the historic Fragonard house, you follow the journey of a scent from flower to flacon.

Higher still, Gourdon clings to its cliff above the gorges of the Loup, with views as far as the sea. The day ends in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a village of ramparts and art galleries where Chagall lived and rests, and where the light in late afternoon is famous.

Small group, full day (8 hours)San Remo market and Dolceacqua

A day in Italy, less than an hour from Nice. On Saturdays, San Remo hosts its great open-air market: stalls of Ligurian olive oil, cheeses, leather and linen, and the chance of a real Italian espresso at the counter.

Inland, the valley narrows to Dolceacqua, a medieval village crowned by the ruins of its castle. Its single-arch stone bridge so moved Claude Monet that he painted it, and the village still makes its own red wine, the Rossese.
